World Vision India (WVI) focuses on empowering people’s organizations, self-help groups (SHGs), and community collectives so that they mobilise additional resources for sustainable livelihood. WVI has been supporting Farmer producer Organization, to develop their respective activities and look forward to establishing sustainable growth paths. Development and incorporation of appropriate business plans is a key step towards sustainable development of FPOs. In this Initiative to FPOs in economic upliftment and overall livelihood development Ecociate partnered by developing value chain for potential products and livelihoods that could be undertaken by the community.
Objectives
The overall objective of the consultancy to strengthen (Farmer’s Producer Organisations (FPO) towards running a successful viable business in select Area Development Programs (ADPs).
Approach and Methodology
The FPOs potentials are determined by conducting a participatory workshop with the FPOs in a cluster-based approach. Ecociate team members visited the respective FPO locations and conducted a rapid assessment of various agriculture products and their market mechanisms so as to develop a strategic road map for each FPO.
The rapid assessment encompassed visits to various production clusters, markets, and service providers relevant to FPO business operations. It was complemented by in-depth discussions and brainstorming sessions involving FPO Board of Directors (BoD) members and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs). Respondents participating in these rapid assessments included producers, enterprises, service providers, local aggregators, traders, district-level, and state-level market participants, among others.
Results
A cluster-based approach was adopted to finalize the products and their corresponding FPO business models. This was achieved through inclusive and participatory discussions that engaged not only relevant FPO members but also officials from the World Vision India Area Development Program (WVI ADP). Throughout this process, the Board of Directors (BoDs) of the FPOs actively participated in every stage, ensuring a strong sense of community ownership within the value chains.
